First congress of women representatives
Elected women representatives gathered for the first congress of the federation SUGRAMA.
The event took place in Bangalore on September 23, after local government elections in the Karnataka State in southern India.
SUGRAMA was formed with support from the Hunger Project and SKL International only two years ago. The objective is to encourage women representatives of the rural local governments of the region to be active leaders and advocate for good governance and social justice.
SUGRAMA already has more than 2.000 members, which means that the federation covers a big part of a large state.
SUGRAMA means a ‘model village’, something that the elected members aspire to make with the help of the federation. It is also short for self sustainable (SU) village (GRAMA).
